A 0.53-second lead at halfway became 1.87 seconds at the finish. Egypt’s Zain Ali turned a fast start into 100m butterfly gold at Dakar 2026—and the numbers show where the race opened up.

A golden finish in 52.16

On 1 November, the Egyptian finished the men’s 100m butterfly final in 52.16 seconds. Serbia’s Aleksej Kalanj followed in 54.03, with Slovakia’s Matiáš Krištof third in 54.71.

The headline is gold. The more revealing detail is how the margin changed between the turn and the wall.

The morning set up the final

Ali had already led the heats in 53.96, according to Africa Aquatics. That performance earned a place in the final; the final itself decided the medals. His winning time was 1.80 seconds faster—an improvement of about 3.34% relative to his heats time.

The second half expanded the lead

Ali reached 50m in 24.18. Kalanj turned in 24.71: the gap was 0.53 seconds. Subtracting the first split from each final time gives a second 50m of 27.98 for Ali and 29.32 for Kalanj.

That is another 1.34 seconds gained over the back half. Add it to the halfway lead and the final margin is 1.87. This explains the recorded times; it does not measure underwater distance, stroke rate, or technique.

More than the seconds on the board

In his World Aquatics interview, Ali described years of work and early training starts behind the result. The race offers the visible outcome of that preparation, rather than a complete account of how he trained.

His World Aquatics medal record also includes 2026 African championship golds over 100m and 200m butterfly. Dakar adds a Youth Olympic title to that progression.
