Farida Osman: the Egyptian sprint specialist with three world medals
Farida Osman’s three World Championships bronzes in the 50m butterfly made an Egyptian swimmer a regular presence on the global podium.
Farida Osman: the Egyptian sprint specialist with three world medalsFarida Osman’s signature race lasts less than half a minute. Yet her record in the women’s 50m butterfly has had a far longer effect on Egyptian and Arab swimming.
World Aquatics lists Osman as representing Egypt and credits her with three World Championships bronze medals, all in the 50m butterfly. The sequence began in Budapest in 2017, continued in Gwangju in 2019 and returned in Doha in 2024. The event is a pure sprint: one length, one turn-free race and almost no room for a hesitant finish.
World Championships record
2017, Budapest: bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly, 25.39.
2019, Gwangju: bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly.
2024, Doha: bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly, 25.67.
Her 2017 podium was historic. World Aquatics described Osman as the first African woman to win a World Championships swimming medal, and as the first Egyptian swimmer to reach a World Championships podium. The same official record now shows three World Championships bronzes in the event.
The Doha result added a regional chapter. Racing at the 2024 World Championships in Qatar, Osman took bronze in 25.67. World Aquatics noted that it matched her medals from Budapest and Gwangju. Her World Aquatics profile also lists a 25.31 African and Egyptian record in the 50m butterfly from the 2019 International Swimming League season. That performance was in a 25m pool, so it should not be compared directly with the long-course World Championships final times above.
Osman’s career offers a clear reference point for swimmers in Egypt and across the region. It is not simply a story of one fast swim. It is a record of returning to the same world-level event, qualifying for the final and converting opportunities into podiums across three championships.
